PETRONAS LEADS INDUSTRY COLLABORATION TO PROMOTE MARITIME SAFETY TO FISHERMEN

Oil and gas operations offshore have been faced with serious threats from fishing activities including fish bombing that have taken place close to exploration facilities.
In mitigating potential incidents, PETRONAS in collaboration with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has embarked on 'Sahabat Maritim' to educate fishermen in Sabah on the risks of encroachment and fish bombing happening within the 500 meter safety radius surrounding oil and gas offshore platforms.
Since the first “Sahabat Maritim” event in Lahad Datu last June, the programme has gained the support of eight other oil and gas companies in Malaysia who believe in the importance of the initiative.
To officiate its collaboration with Shell Malaysia, Murphy Oil, HESS, UMW Oil and Gas, ConocoPhillips, Repsol, Petrofac and SapuraKencana Petroleum, PETRONAS will be organising a signing ceremony for the industry supported “Sahabat Maritim” programme.
All eight oil and gas companies will sign the agreement together with PETRONAS Vice President of Malaysia Petroleum Management (MPM), Zamri Jusoh, witnessed by MMEA.
