The event is targeted for local/international companies including palm oil mills, other investors and researchers.
SATREPS, Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development Program, is a Japanese government program that promotes international joint research. The program is collaboration between the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). It aims to address global issues and lead to research outcomes of practical benefit to both local and global society.
Being the biggest contributor to Malaysia’s Gross National Income (GNI) from the agriculture sector, the palm oil industry produces the largest amount of biomass. If utilized more efficiently with advanced technology, it could generate profit and reduce environmental burden. The project aims to develop technologies for effective utilization and recycling of palm biomass such as EFB (Empty Fruit Bunch) and POME (Palm Oil Mill Effluent) and excess energy such as hot steam and methane gas, for production of useful materials such as bio-composite, bio-plastic materials, micro-fibre charcoal, and compost. The project also verifies business model and investment plan for the palm oil industry through the “Zero-discharge” approach. Pilot plant has been installed at a palm oil mill as show case facilities of the proposed technologies and will be ready for visits early next year.
The participating agencies involved in the project are as follows:
1. Universiti Putra Malaysia, Malaysia (Project Manager - Prof. Dr. Mohd. Ali Hassan)
2. Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Malaysia (Deputy Project Manager-Prof. Dr. Charles Vairappan)
3. Kyushu Institute of Technology, Japan (Chief Advisor- Prof. Dr. Yoshihito Shirai)
4. Kyushu University, Japan (Prof. Dr. Kenji Sakai)
5. Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Japan (Dr. Shinji Fujimoto)
You are cordially invited to send a reporter and photographer/cameraman to cover the event.
