SATREPS is the Japanese Government Program under cooperation between the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) which is to encourage and strengthen the international science and technology (S&T) cooperation. It aims to address global issues and leads to research outcomes of practical benefit to both local and global societies. Through SATREPS project, acquisition of new knowledge and technology from the collaboration of Japanese and Malaysian counterparts resolves the global issues and also develops sustainable research capacity. Landslides and floods are two major natural disasters that cause human losses and economic damage in Malaysia. For the last ten years (2005 – 2014), floods affected 342,526 people and caused the economic damage estimated of 990 Million US dollars in Malaysia. In response to the above situation, the Government agencies prioritize the importance of reducing geo-hazard damage caused by landslides and floods.

The overall objective of this project is to propose a trial system of an advanced disaster risk management system with an integrated data system of landslide and flood to the relevant agencies in Malaysia for supporting to their consideration of disaster management programs implementation. Early warning system developed by the project is expected to be considered as a risk communication tool for use in the administration and the local communities in Malaysia.

Malaysian researchers in this project mainly come from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), Multimedia University (MMU) and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN). The government agencies also involve in this project including the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), Public Works Department (PWD(JKR)), and the National Security Council (NSC). This research is also bilateral cooperation with researchers from Japanese counterparts such as University of Tokyo (UT), Centre of Environmental Remote Sensing (CEReS), Chiba University, Ibaraki University, International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM), Kansai University, Kyushu University, National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED), Niigata University, Nippon Koei, Vision Tech Inc. (VTI), Kyoto University, Public Works Research Institute (PWRI) and SlopeWatch.
